We are in an unusual position on this one: we ship DIY starlight kits across Canada and the United States, and we also install professionally in Edmonton and Vancouver. We make money either way, so here is the comparison without a thumb on the scale.
What each option really costs
A professional install with us is $1,450 for 400pc or $1,600 for 600pc, twinkle included, all in. That covers the fiber, LED engine, remote, wiring, removal, install and reinstall. A DIY kit is a fraction of that up front. What people forget to count is trim tools, adhesive, a heat source, fuse taps and wire, plus a full weekend or two of labour. Realistically you are looking at 15 to 20 hours for a standard headliner and 20 to 30 for a sunroof car. The hidden cost is the redo. A cracked or torn headliner board is a $400 to $800 replacement, and a second attempt means buying more fiber. That is the number that flips the maths.
When DIY is the right call
DIY makes sense if you have done interior trim work before, you are patient, and you have a warm indoor space to work in — Alberta garages in February are not it, since adhesive and fabric both misbehave in the cold. It also makes sense if you are outside our service areas. We ship kits with pre terminated fiber, the LED engine, remote and instructions across Canada and the United States, and we stay reachable by phone or text while you install. Older vehicles and project builds are perfect DIY candidates. If the headliner is already coming out for a recover, adding stars while it is on the bench is the easiest time to do it.
When professional install wins
Newer vehicles, leases, luxury interiors and anything with a panoramic sunroof are where the professional route pays for itself. Sunroof cassettes, drain tubes you cannot pinch and fragile boards around the cut out are where most DIY attempts fail. It also wins on finish. Consistent strand length, varied star density and an invisible LED engine are the difference between a ceiling that looks factory optional and one that looks homemade. And it wins on time. A build we finish in a day takes most first timers two weekends.
The finish difference, honestly
A good DIY install can look genuinely great. We have seen customer photos we would happily put on our own page. The average DIY install does not. The usual tells are uneven star spacing in obvious rows, a few dozen strands cut proud of the fabric, a visible LED engine tucked behind the visor, and slightly frayed fabric at each star from front side piercing. Be honest with yourself about which one you are likely to produce.
